Question: Will Acidophilus Help My 5 Year Old Son's Eczema?
|
My 5 year old son has eczema, and during the last 9 months has completed 7 courses of antibiotics due to skin infections. I have been hearing and reading much about taking supplements to restore his micro-flora (although our GP does not see any problem in continuously prescribing antibiotics!). Is acidophilus such a supplement? If so, is it safe to administer to a 5 year old child? Also, I have read some articles recently in our (English) press about "leaky gut syndrome." Is this associated? Please respond if you have anything that you feel will help.
Thank you,`
Mark W.

I recently submitted a response to the other question on this topic of acidophilus - please read that. If I had a child on antibiotics, I wouldn't think twice about giving him/her acidophilus. It's completely safe and necessary in replenishing the good bacteria destroyed by the antibiotics. They make children's formulas (which is just a lesser potency). If you have ANY concerns about giving your child acidophilus, at least serve her/him a good yogurt a couple times a day (which has naturally occurring acidophilus in it) one with little or no sugar (I suggest Stoneyfield - they even make flavors w/o sugar which you'd find in the health food stores only). I wish you good luck and good health!
