Androstenedione

Consumer Review: Take It From An Older Guy Who Has Tried Andro, You Don't Want To Mess With This Stuff If You're Under 40.
Most of the people responding on this site are under 40. I am a 52 year old male who tried androstenedione for one week. I took 50mgs per day, once a day, except for two days when I tried 50mgs twice daily. Towards the end of the week, I found that I needed less sleep, but one morning I awoke feeling somewhat anxious, and with an elevated heart rate. I ceased using andro after researching available info on it. On the positive side, I seemed to have more energy, needed less sleep while using it, and experienced a slight increase in sexual desire. I experienced more stamina while exercising as well.

I also use 7-keto, which is a form or DHEA that does not convert to androgens in the body, thereby presenting less risk of prostate problems, etc. I have consulted with my doctor and had my DHEA levels checked before continuing it in my dietary regimen. I do not believe that excessive amounts of protein are healthy. One has to take into consideration the stress this puts upon the kidneys and liver. I eat a largely organic foods diet...organic eggs, lots of green vegetables (phyto chemicals help neutralize excess estrogen), deep sea fish, whole grains, plenty of fresh water, a vitamin and mineral supplement, and various Chinese herbs prescribed by an experienced, licensed Chinese herbalist and acupuncturist, tailored to my specific physical constitution.

I tried all kinds of supplements and weight training regimens when I was younger. I practice tai chi and other soft forms of martial arts, do a moderate amount of resistance and aerobic training, and have more than acceptable muscle mass and definition for a man of my age. I am at an age when a man's testosterone levels begin to decline, so I tried the andro to see what effect it would have.

Based upon my experience, I don't think anyone under 40 should even THINK of taking andro or DHEA without at least consulting a physician. Your testosterone levels should be more than sufficient, provided you are eating a healthy diet, and getting proper rest. Exercise alone will help boost your testosterone levels.

If you are intent on trying to increase your muscle mass and strength with supplements, SEE YOUR DOCTOR! Get a complete physical, and have your hormone levels checked. Don't play Russian roulette with your health. Hormone stimulating supplements like andro and DHEA may have beneficial effects at low doses on people over 40, but there is scientific evidence that suggests the opposite for those under 40. If your body is producing enough testosterone and DHEA already, then adding hormone supplements to your diet may suppress its natural ability to produce them. The excess testosterone may convert to estrogen. If you insist on using these supplements..be conservative! There is not enough scientific data to conclusively ascertain what the long term effects may be.
