Creatine

Consumer Review: Creatine Gave Me Bad Muscle Cramps Until I Started Drinking More Water.
I have tried using Creatine 3 times now and the first time I used it I got severe muscle cramps, especially in my quads, hence I quit taking it. The second time I tried it, I felt the cramps starting again so I quit right away before they got bad.

I have talked to many people about this and the biggest thing I was told was to drink lots of water. With this information I am giving Creatine one more chance. I have been drinking like a fish. I guess I have been on Creatine for just over a week and I haven't really felt the cramps. My legs are a bit cramped, but I think that it is from my leg workout last night. I am hoping that these symptoms don't come back so that I can also reap the benefits of this drug. I guess my question is: has anyone experienced this effect or can you be Creatine intolerant?

I'm researching Creatine out of interest as one of my friends has started taking it. I've found that it causes your muscles to absorb water, which causes the initial weight increase. It's not surprising then that you need to drink so much. It should, I think, level out as your muscle mass increases to replace this water. Please let me know if you have any side affects.

Yes, you can be creatine-intolerant or a "nonresponder" to creatine.

This is the most common side effect of taking creatine and not drinking enough water. You should drink at least 2 litres of water a day while you are on creatine. Believe me, I had the worst case of quad cramps during squats in my LIFE!!!! I thought I was gonna die. It turns out that it was my own damn fault for not drinking enough water. For three weeks I drank 2 litres a day - no problems. Guess when I got my cramps from hell? That's right, 3 days after stupidly not drinking my 2 litres of water a day. I'll never make that mistake again.
