| I do volunteer work for a non-profit organization called H.E.A.T. (Halt Ephedrine Abuse Today). This organization has a survey on the internet regarding the use of ephedrine and ma huang, and so far we have received more than 800 responses.
People are reporting side effects such as: rapid and/or irregular heartbeat, difficult urination, insomnia, dizziness/lightheadedness, headaches, mood swings, withdrawal symptoms and/or depression upon discontinuing use of the product, hallucinations and more. Among the more severe adverse reactions are kidney stones, seizures, strokes, heart attacks, psychosis, addiction, and of course, death.
As of August 11, 2000, of the people who responded to this survey who were taking only HERBAL ephedrine products, 60% reported side effects of some kind, and 26% reported that they were addicted. The vast majority of these people were taking the recommended dosage or less. (These numbers are even higher among those using synthetic ephedrine products.)
Anyone taking products containing ephedrine or ma huang should exercise extreme caution, and any adverse reactions should be reported to the FDA as well as the product manufacturer as these companies are not known for following up or reporting any adverse event reports that they receive. Also, anyone interested in completing the ephedrine internet survey can do so at http://www.ephedrainjury.com.
