Glucosamine

Question: My Doctor Recommended Glucosamine And Chondroitin To Treat Bone Spurs. Has This Worked For Anyone?
Went to the Dr. and had x-rays done to the right side of my lower back where the pain is located. His diagnosis after we (two doctors and I) looked at the x-ray was bone spurs. I asked the doctors how can I get rid of the spurs? They said it is a permanent condition and I will have to live with the spurs and pain. The pain usually occurs, after playing golf (18 holes), strenuous work around the house, twisting my body a certain way, and sometimes it is continuos throughout the day. I use a magnetic back brace to relieve the pain. Although it relieve the pain outwardly (temporarily), the pain is can fill the pain when I arch my back or twist it a certain way. My Doctor said that when the pain occurs, I can get relief by taking Aleve, Ibuprofen when I get the pain, but this only mask the problem. My Doctor suggested that I try taking Glucosamine Chondroitin and see how it works. He said some of his patients had relief from it.

I don't want live with this pain, mask it or medicate it forever. I'd like to get rid of the pain. Maybe I should get a second opinion. Is there something that can be done?...see an orthopedic, maybe get an outpatient laser surgery (I read about it someplace), or medication to correct this condition. I also have golfers elbow (tennis elbow), but its coming around with rest, presently.

By the way, I'm 67 years old but and still active. I'd like to play golf, pain free. Please advise.

I have a bone spur on my toe joint beneath my big toe. Diagnosed 10 years ago. I took Ibuprofen for a bit. Doctor told me the bone spur was arthritic. So I read a book on Arthritis Cures and found that diet has a lot to do with it. Found I was allergic to tomatoes and eggplant, and other members of the deadly nightshade vegetable family. When I ate them, the pain was worse.

Everyone is different. What works for me, may not work for you. BUT five years ago someone told me about yucca, herbal caps. I took a couple a day and the pain stayed away. Then I quit taking them and it returned. Last year I tried glucosamine (without the chondroitin) and the glucosamine alone works great. It keeps the inflammation down. Today in researching bone spurs on the internet, I saw on Herbal Dave's Notebook something about bone spurs being caused by too much calcium supplements like calcium carbonate, and that acidifying the system may help.

Good luck! I think yucca or glucosamine work like anti-inflammatories and don't have the awful side effects that Ibuprofen has (it can cause terrible ulcers and bleeding of your stomach without any symptoms). But keep in mind no matter what you read, that you'll have to experiment a little, because what works for one person may not work for you -- but then again, it might! So good luck.
