Is Glutamine
Steroid Like?

Question: Are There Any Side Effects Of Supplementing Extra Glutamine Into Your Diet Whether It Be In The Pill Form Or Powder Form?
I have been deciding on whether or not to supplement L-glutamine. I have heard that glutamine works wonders but I do not like the fact that L-glutamine products, sold at GNC, are mostly in the pill form. I am curious on whether or not the pill form would hurt my kidneys, liver, etc.? Would a powdered form, if available, be more safe than a pill form? Also, are there any side effects of supplementing extra glutamine into your diet whether it be in the pill form or powder form?

Question expanded by another reader.
I just started taking Glutamine Fuel by Twin Lab because I've read about it and have heard some good things about it. I figured I would use this instead of creatine because I've heard some bad things about creatine. For example, I heard that creatine increases muscle size, but the ligaments supporting the muscles do not grow as fast. Therefore, they can't support all of the muscle. I was wondering how many mg of glutamine a day I should consume to gain lean muscle. Should I spread out my dosages. I'm 140lb. 5'9" and 20 years old.

Question expanded by another reader.
How old should males be when they start taking L-glutamine? Are they able to take it when they are in the teens or when they are still growing? How should they take the L-glutamine? When should they take it, how much, before or after their training? 500mg?

My son wants to take this (he's 13). He has been playing football, baseball, and basketball. He is 5'8" and about 160-170. He wanted to lose a little weight and build up his biceps, triceps, and chest. I am really concerned that this might make him have kidney damage, liver damage, stunt his growth, or make him sterile. I really don't know what might happen or how bad the effects can be. My wife is the biggest worry wart and she really wanted me to write you. Please respond soon.

I have used Creavescant w/L-glutamine and Myoplex + deluxe for about 2 months. In those 2 months I have increased bench weight by 30 LB's and Preacher curls have also jumped 30 Lb's. Other areas of my training have increased significantly. I have noticed no side effects except in my forearms. They seem to hurt all the way to the bone. I feel the increase in weight and intensity these supplements allowed me to experience was too rapid for my tendons, joints and bones.

I would suggest "Be very careful and do not forget your limits." Luckily, I noticed a problem (un-natural pain) and backed off a little before I damaged something. I now will cycle from the creavescant and L-Glutamine to Soy or Whey protein at regular intervals and see if I can get the best of both worlds (never put all your eggs in one basket).

Myoplex thus far seems to be a very good supplement and I recently found out by reading the ingredients on a coworkers can of slim fast that Myoplex plus deluxe only has 40 more calories than slim fast and myoplex has much more of the stuff to feed the machine.

For some reason glutamine knocks me out. I take it, and 30 minutes later I am fast asleep, unable to stay awake for anything. Needless to say, this is not conducive to working out. I would simply change my routine and take it before bedtime, but I am not comfortable with anything that has such a profound effect on me. I think you should check into it a little bit more, maybe ask your doctor, especially in the case of the 13 year old.

Glutamine comes in powder form. It is often cheaper than the pill. The powder by itself (without any coloring or flavoring) dissolves into water very well. The mixture of dissolved glutamine and water is tasteless but you might be repulsed by the after taste.

As to side effects, everybody reacts to things differently. When I take glutamine right before bedtime, it takes me a while to fall asleep. When I wake up, I feel refreshed. For me, that can be a mixed blessing for I am often late at night studying or doing homework.

Take about 1 to 2mg of glutamine a day and see if it agrees with you. It is important to go on something slowly to gauge the reaction. Excessive glutamine can also make your gut grow! I read somewhere that glutamine and growth hormone injections work very well in patients with underdeveloped guts.

I hope this helps,
Al
