Question: Can Glutamine Give A Steroid Like Anabolic Effect?
I've been supplementing with Glutamine in a powder for 30 days now and I'm thinking more is better. I want a lot of hormones in my system but, I don't want to hurt myself. Please, somebody tell me the absolute maximum I can take to produce an anabolic effect similar to steroids. I need information on glutamine. Am I overdosing causing this similar anabolic effect?

Answer #1
No, glutamine cannot give you a steroid like effect, BUT it is very important for you to use. I have been reading on this subject for years. I have found that a dose of 10 grams 1/2 an hour before you train on an empty stomach will sufficiently supply your body with enough of this amino acid to ensure that your muscles stay saturated. You will also benefit from glutamine's natural growth hormone releasing action combined with the body's natural response to exercise..which is releasing growth hormone.

You also should take 10 grams with your post workout meal. This meal SHOULD BE A LIQUID MEAL. Use an isolated whey protein (for fast absorption), maltodextrin and dextrose carbohydrate combo (for fast and slow release carbs to replenish glycogen stores), and creatine. Try to take 2 grams during the day about 2 or 3 times spread out evenly.

As far as overdosing, you should not worry. You may urinate more often as you increase your doses, but this is because your body is using the glutamine thus creating an "after product" ammonia. Your body sees this as a "poison" (not harmful, just not usable by the body) so it gets rid of it .

I hope this helps. I am not into giving blind supplement advice. I have first hand knowledge and experience that the advice given here will yield great results!

Answer #1 is right on. However, I feel the need to inform you that taking creatine and glutamine together does not produce optimum results. Creatine and glutamine use the same carrier molecule to be shuttled through the body. It is best to wait 90 minutes or more between the two.

Answer #3
Glutamine has been shown in some research to have a possible role in enhancing immunity, reducing catabolism, and enhancing pulsatile secretion of endogenous growth hormone. However, care should be taken with any supplement that influences hormones such as human growth hormone that have a broad spectrum influence on a host of structures within the body. It has not conclusively been shown to increase muscle hypertrophy or hyperplasia in adults but has been shown to increase thickening of bones in the hands, face, and feet (acromegaly), increase the size of the liver, heart, and kidneys, and to cause a permanent disruption in pituitary secretion of GHRH (growth-hromone releasing hormone) after use for extended periods.

So, before you make any decisions about the use of supplementation to enhance athletic performance (like the other responder to your question), be sure to safeguard your own health by getting all the facts and by asking them their credentials. Physicians are the best to ask about these things, as they are likely to give you the truth, and they tend to have the background, scientific credentials, and actual research evidence to back up their advice. Please be careful and do your best to be informed. Go on "Medline" and read about the possible effects of growth hormone and creatine.

Glutamine will NOT give you any steroid-like anabolic effects. I recommend taking it though. Reason: Glutamine makes up 60 percent of all free form amino acids in your muscle cells, is the fuel for the cells of your immune system, as well as insuring the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. It is labeled a conditionally essential amino acid which means if you lift, take it.

Someone responded and said to take 10 grams before and after a workout. This to me makes little sense. 50-85 percent of all 5 gram dosages or larger never reach the blood stream because it is absorbed by the GI tract. 2 gram dosages every 4 hours throughout the day are recommended. This is the best way to ensure optimal absorption and causes the greatest increase in natural GH levels. The GH increase will not be noticeable, but a little GH goes a long way. In addition, glutamine is highly anti-catabolic which means that it aids in the prevention of muscle loss. I recommend taking glutamine for immune function and its anti-catabolic properties. Also, recent studies suggest that taking glutamine with and insulin releasing carb (i.e. dextrose) may increase the overall uptake of carbs by your muscle cells. Hope this helps. OUT.
