Question: Does Metabolife Cause Heart Problems?
Are the amounts of ephedrine in the herb Ma Huang found in Matabolife harmful to your health? Are there any other ingredients in Metabolife that are harmful. I've heard that Metabolife causes heart problems. Is this true? I'm 20 years old and have been taking it for a month. If anyone's heard of this please let me know.

Question expanded by another reader.
If Metabolife is so rich in natural herbs why would there be side effects? What herb is the one that could make you nauseous? Ma Huang is reported to be dangerous but in what dosage? Is 16mg safe to take in your supplement? How much weight can one lose? Will you put it back on even if you exercise 5 times a week? How long can you take Metabolife?

(This answer was submitted by Enerjize, a company that sells Metabolife.)

The amount of caffeine in Metabolife 356 ™ is equal to that in one quarter cup of brewed coffee (about 40mg.). It is the distinct combination of herbs that make it so effective.

As with all individuals who wish to lose weight by using Metabolife, we strongly recommend that people with high blood pressure consult their personal physician. A common situation is that a person is overweight and has hypertension. Often a contributing factor to their high blood pressure is the fact that they are overweight. By losing weight, in many situations this can have a beneficial effect on lowering blood pressure.

If under the close supervision of a physician, the individual is able to safely use our product, often the end result is a lowering of the blood pressure by virtue of the resultant weight loss.

Ephedra and caffeine are however, both mild central nervous system and cardiovascular stimulants. In someone who has a heart condition, the use of these substances may not be advisable. The ultimate decision as to whether Metabolife 356™ can be used in these situations rests on your personal physician.

If you have low blood pressure, check with your doctor before using any product that contains Ma Huang.

Answer #2
Metabolife contains chromium picolinate that has recently been studied to be an unsafe drug that causes DNA mutations and can cause cancer cells. If you're thinking about taking it-------DON'T. If that's not enough, it also causes dizziness, nausea, and extreme jitterness. Result: Very unsafe.

Answer #3
I have been taking Metabolife 356 for several months. I had bypass surgery last July. I am only 38 years old, but my cardiologist ok'd the use of Metabolife. I got to where I took 2 in the am and took about 2 in the pm. I have recently stopped taking them because I was getting used to them. I will begin taking them again in a few weeks. They had no adverse effects on me at all. They were the best appetite suppressant I have ever taken. I had already lost 40 lbs prior to starting them. So, I lost about 10 lbs over about 6 wks. Not much, but since I had already lost 40lbs, I think they worked well.

I am not saying to go ahead and take them. You must consult your own physician for yourself. My cardiologist said there wasn't anything in them that could hurt me. I have been taking TwinLab's Diet Fuel (with Citrimax). They work well. My heart rate remains between 75 and 80 while on them. I am going to try Xenadrine soon. My Cardiologist was hesitant to ok this because they contain Synephrine, a stimulant. I told him I would keep a close watch on heart rate and he said.........uh huh?!

Hope this helps,
Kevin

If chromium is going to kill you, why is there an established daily value for it? And why is it in most vitamins? Is this some other formof chromium?

Amaranth

This is in response to the chromium question. I did read an article about chromium PICOLINATE and how it can cause cancer etc. It basically said that it's not the chromium that's bad for you, it's the picolinate that's added, blah, blah, blah. The article was obviously more detailed than my explanation; but, I read it a long time ago and it was enough to make me not EVER try any drug that claims to help you lose weight. Everyone knows how to lose weight; EAT RIGHT AND EXERCISE!!! It's that simple. Nothing more nothing less. And that, my friends, causes no side effects. It is just that the majority of people in this world will always, at whatever cost, try to take the easy way as opposed to the RIGHT way.

Answer #4
Alright, speaking from personal experience, ma huang and guarana (AKA caffeine) do "work" for weight-loss...flat out. However, from a more cynical point of view, so does anorexia. Being a member of the fitness staff at an athletic club in Lancaster, MA, I have seen the effects of almost every dietary supplement on the market, and I would say that metabolife is a worthwhile investment. However, the results you can achieve (as stated above) can be just as easily achieved through proper nutrition and aerobic/anaerobic training. The use of metabolife pills is most useful in getting on that track, and I highly encourage anyone who is overweight and wants to get on the right track to try metabolife (with a physician's approval obviously). Also, to answer 2, I have seen no such report that chromium picolinte causes cancer, and if so, at what doses?
