Question: Is Ma Huang A Healthy Choice For Weight Loss?
Is Ma Huang a healthy choice for weight loss? Please give me your personal experiences in taking products containing this herb.

I am writing to tell you that yesterday, October 19, 1999, I was at work and all of a sudden experienced a very rapid heart rate. I went to the ER (I work in a hospital), and I was in a dangerous and potentially life threatening cardiac rhythm called PSVT. The doctor converted me into a normal rhythm by using carotid artery massage. I truly believe this happened, not once yesterday but twice, because I am on an herbal weight loss plan, containing the herb Ma Huang. It was very scary and I do not plan to take it again.

I believe it is. Ma Huang taken in moderate quantities (less than 150mg per day) is both safe and effective. Any product with less than 150mg should be safe and will provide beneficial effects when included with a healthy weight loss program.

About 6 or 7 years ago, I began taking a product with Ma Huang in it. I had asked the health food store clerk for something for energy. She gave me that product. Well, it had added benefits I discovered--I lost a lot of weight and was on a great positive "high."

Now, 6 or 7 years later, I think it's very safe to say that I'm addicted and cannot function at my job or in life without taking it every day. Without it, I'm so tired, depressed and irritable that I'd sooner kill myself. Now I'm so caught because I want to get off of it because I'm scared it will kill me anyway! I have occasional chest pains, terrible headaches and just this week had many dizzy spells, which just yesterday I found out, combined may be a sign of a stroke. Two doctors I told when I went for help practically made fun of it and were of no help. I'll most likely have to take a leave of absence from work if I ever do try to kick this because I tried once before and just could not work without having murderous thoughts about everyone I came in contact with. I can't afford to be off of work, and plus I can't very well tell them I need time off to kick my addiction. I'm at a loss. I really hope this has scared the life out of you while you still have one! Please don't do it. Had I known at the time, I would never have done it. It's not worth it. I just want to spare as many people as I can from this pain. It starts innocently and unknowingly, and than it takes hold of you. I hope I've helped.

Wow...it's only an herb. Like mary jane. Try decreasing your dose slowly week by week until you're not taking it anymore. Drink more water and try out the herbal beverage "Sobe" with St. John's Wort in it. When you crave this substance and start having "murderous thoughts", which warrant psychotherapy, actually, then drink the Sobe and chill.

Try anger management too. That often helps. I don't think you need drug rehab unless you're addicted to pain killers, heroin, crank, PCP, LSD, GHB, or ecstasy. THOSE cause murderous thoughts, severe withdrawal, and a warranted depression.
