| It's time to try something else when you know you should be crying, but you can't. SSRI's like paxil, zoloft, prozac, and celexa cause a side effect called "emotional liability." In other words, lack of emotion felt. When I took zoloft while my mother was terminally ill, I was not able to cry. Not until I discontinued the zoloft was I again able to cry. It felt good to have feelings again, to feel human again, not like some emotionless robot as I had felt while I was on the drug, just as you described.
Discontinue the paxil with the help of the doctor. If the doctor argues that you should stay on the paxil, argue back that you cannot stand the way it makes you feel and that you want to take another antidepressant, if depression is your problem. If so, do NOT take any of the SSRI antidepressants mentioned above, or Effexor, as they ALL have this side effect. If your doctor says he/she wants you to take any of them, tell the doctor you don't want to because of that side effect. If the doctor argues that the severity of this side effect is less with the other SSRI's, still refuse to take them. I have taken zoloft, paxil, and celexa, and they all had the same effect of making me not care about anything.
If depression is your problem, don't be afraid to tell your doctor you want to take a different antidepressant such as Wellbutrin. If you can't take that, try Serzone, which is especially good for anxiety-related depression. Remeron is also good, but a very common side effect is A LOT of weight gain. When I questioned my doctor about the weight gain, he said I was thin and that it wouldn't make me look bad, so I took it. I weighed about 160. Then after taking Remeron for 2 or 3 months, I weighed about 200! I was quite pissed that I took my doctor's opinion to heart, even though he was a good guy, or so he seemed.
At any rate, get the heck off of that paxil (with you doctor's help) and tell your doctor you want to take something for your depression that will still allow you to feel your negative emotions when the time is appropriate. A herbal remedy that is very strong is combining St. John's Wort with 5-HTP. It's a bit expensive, but just as effective at relieving depression and anxiety as prescription drugs, with virtually no side effects. Try to have a nice day.
