Paxil

Consumer Review: Paxil Put An End To 50 Years Of Panic Attacks, Anxiety And Nightmares.
I suffered for my entire life with anxiety disorder, panic attacks, resultant fears of being in crowded, noisy or claustrophobic situations, any of which could precipitate a panic attack. I had perpetual diarrhea from nerves, I nightmared, I had shakiness and even went through a period of several years of semi-anorexia. The anxiety problem also caused depression.

At age 50, I finally could not manage to cope any longer with the debilitating symptoms and sought help. I was prescribed Paxil and I cannot even begin to describe the wonderful turn-around this drug has caused. Whatever chemical brain imbalance I have, which I have ample reason to believe is inherent, this drug works for me. The only side effect which I have noticed is a lessened sexual desire, and I can live with that very easily.

I have read a lot of stories about people who experienced very negative reactions to Paxil, which I think is very unfortunate, however, anything that affects brain chemistry has to be treated with great respect. Not all anxiety or other sorts of disorders that this particular drug may be prescribed to counteract are caused by the same basic problem. This is why some people have to work closely with their doctors to find the drug that works best for them. So my basic message is - seek help and do not stop seeking until you find what works for you personally. We are all different and have different needs - but help is there. Paxil is an excellent option - if it works for you.

Response #1
I too had suffered with anxiety symptoms for most of my life. I can remember that as a small child, I had the beginnings of OCD. OCD did not become my major problem, but social anxiety disorder did. Constant worry was ruining my life and my family relationships. My husband was ready to leave me. After years of visiting doctors, one of whom gave me Zoloft, I finally was prescribed Paxil. I did not like Zoloft, and quit it after one week. Paxil was my lifesaver. I am much less tense, and situations that normally occur in life seem easier to deal with. My daughter told me she wished I had found it sooner. My husband says I am a different person. I never knew I could feel this "normal." I am not completely without some worries, and basically I am "me." But, I can function in life, especially at home and on my job.

I have nothing but praise for this new class of antidepressants. Paxil has a few side effects for me; some lessening with time. I have never had a strong sex drive anyway, so that side effect is a moot point for me. I deal with the orgasm thing. I was on 10ml for over a year, and while I gained some weight, it was not bad. But, as soon as I switched to 20ml, up went the weight. My doctor said this was common. I told her it was good I am on Paxil because if I gained that much weight otherwise, I'd be extremely depressed. The other side effect I notice is that Paxil makes me perspire more -- when I exercise, and at night when I sleep is when I notice it the most.

Paxil can be a miracle for many people, as I'm sure the other SRI's can be as well. I would hope that no one today suffers needlessly in their quiet anxious state as I did for so long. Paxil is "just what what the doctor ordered" for me. I believe that genetics plays a large role in shaping our emotional outlook. My mother also had anxiety issues, which in her time were solved with Valium. My daughter has anxiety issues, and she too is on Paxil after trying many other new drugs, none of which were working for her. She has gained a tremendous amount of weight. I would like to get off Paxil some day. I'll just have to wait and see.
