| My doctor prescribed Paxil to relieve some mild depression that I was experiencing. That evening I took the drug. The next morning, I woke feeling a bit sick to my stomach. I experienced some diarrhea, but thought nothing of it. I took a shower and began feeling weak. After getting out of the shower, I began to have numbing and tingling in my hands arm and feet, especially on in my left arm and into the neck. I thought I was having a stroke. I began to feel weaker and dizzy and quickly got onto the bed. I was unable to lift my head. Perspiration poured out of my body and everything was turning black. I managed to reach the phone and dialed 911. The operator kept me talking until the EMTs arrived.
When they got there, my blood pressure was 60/40 so they rushed me to the hospital. I was kept overnight, checked thoroughly for heart problems, with no thought about the Paxil. Somehow, I felt that it was the drug that had made me nearly die. When I got out of the hospital, the doctor said to begin taking Paxil again as it was perfectly safe. So, I believed him and took the medication three nights later.
The next morning, I woke up and was unable to move. My body was in some sort of seizure and was tingling all over. All at once, uncontrollable diarrhea struck me. I could feel myself slipping into blackness and all my mind could say was, get some water before you dehydrate completely. I managed (I don't know how) to crawl out of the bed to the bathroom sink where I took gulps of water while still experiencing the horrible uncontrolled diarrhea. At that point I just lay there and waited.
After 30 minutes I regained enough strength to move. I called my daughter who took me into the doctor's office. My blood work showed that I had lost necessary body salts from the purging diarrhea and was severely dehydrated. The doctor still would not admit that it was the Paxil that caused those two horrible events. I researched on the web and learned that a small percentage of people "do" experience what I went through. I just was sooooo lucky to get to go through it twice. For several weeks afterwards I had mini panic attacks when I woke in the morning. I don't know if it was the result of having some of the drug still in my body or from the fear that the drug placed in my mind.
I do not believe that Paxil is a safe drug and will never believe so.
