Consumer Review: When I Quit Taking Paxil, I Had Horrible Electrical Shocks And Delayed Vision And I Could Not Function.
|
| I have been taking 25mg of Paxil for 1 and a half years. I wanted to get off of it because I wanted to go off my birth control. On a Thursday, I went down 5mg for a week. Then I went down 5mg more to 15mg for another week. By Saturday, 2 and a half weeks later I was down to nothing. Without the Paxil, I felt electrical shocks in my brain constantly, with short pauses in between. When I moved my eyes to look anywhere, it felt like my vision was a couple seconds behind. I managed to drive to work on Monday. I couldn't imagine staying home because of going off of Paxil! I got there and I had to leave, incapable of doing anything, totally overwhelmed. My doctor moved, so I had to get my doctor to refill the prescription and I took one 20mg pill. By the next day I still felt incapable of functioning. The next day, I went to work, but it took all week to feel back to where I was. I have to wait a month to get into another Doctor. I go the end of November, hoping they can give me something to lessen the side effects so I can work.
If anyone out there has went off Paxil and suffered these side effects, and the side effects went away, PLEASE RESPOND so I know that it is possible to get off of this stuff without doing any permanent damage! By the way, while taking this, I have felt great. No problems at all while I am on it. It really helped me with my multiple symptoms of PMS, anxiety and OCD symptoms. But if I knew that this was going to happen to get off of it, I would never of went on this.
I saw a Dateline special on this the very night on Tuesday when I missed work. People having problems getting off of Paxil. I know now that I may need months to get off of it. Some of the people on Dateline did do it slowly with the help of their doctor, and they still had the same side effects! Doctors give this stuff away like candy, no special instructions. I feel we should be told about this. It is a very strong, mind changing drug. If they didn't have warnings about electrical shock to the brain when you decide to go off of it, and that you will not be able to function for who knows how long, then I wonder what kind of damage does this do to the brain in the long term. So my message stands firm and loud. DO NOT TAKE PAXIL!

| I am reading these reviews that talk about the electric shock thing when going off of Paxil. Well, I was on 20 mgs, then upped to 30 mgs....it has been just about a year now. I take the paxil at bedtime, and what sometimes occurs (not regularly) is that I will be asleep and be suddenly awakened by what is like a shot going off in my head, accompanied with a bright light flash. When it first occurred, I was concerned that it might have been because I had some wine earlier, and you are not supposed to have any alcohol whatsoever while on the drug. But, the same phenomena has happened with no alcohol, so I am not sure if that was really the cause.
When I read your review, I could relate with that electric shock thing, but you were weaning off of the drug....I am not and do not intend to. The stuff works like a charm for me, except for this light flash, crash boom bang thing in the skull. Of course, when that wakes me, then it is hard to get back to sleep. The only other things that I think the drug has caused me is that I get very yawny by mid-afternoon, and I do require at least 9 full hours of sleep per night. I have gained about 8 pounds, but that could be menopause. Any comments anyone?
