Paxil

Consumer Review: Paxil Turned My Husband Into An Overweight, Lethargic Hermit.
My husband has been taking Paxil for 7 months now. He feels it has helped, but he doesn't see that the side effects are affecting our family. If he is not at work, he is sleeping. He has gained at least 25 pounds, has no sex drive and doesn't really care to have a social life. I'm hoping that I can get him to consider St. John's Wort instead. Any words of wisdom would help!

Response #1
I have been taking Paxil now for roughly 9 months for high blood pressure (the doctor thought that if my perceived level of stress went down, so would my blood pressure). She originally prescribed 20mg per day in the morning. But I found that 10mg at night works best (she has since changed the prescription instructions). I am wondering if your husband is depressed, as what you describe are classic symptoms of depression. I'm not sure why your husband is taking Paxil, but if it is for depression, he may need to change medications so as to find one that is most effective for him.

Response #2
Paxil is often prescribed for depression and anxiety disorders (I took it a couple years back for about 5 months because of severe panic attacks and depression). So if he is on it for depression, that's quite common.

I got myself off Paxil because I felt the effectiveness had dropped for me after the first couple of months, and because I wanted to learn to deal with my anxiety and depression naturally (i.e., diet/exercise, therapy, etc.). I too, had ZERO sex drive (and I was a newlywed) and had put on about 15 pounds (which boggled my doctor at the time who told me, "Most people lose weight while on Paxil").

If he gets off Paxil, do it slooooowly. I tried to quit by taking half pills instead of whole ones, and I was heaving by the second day. I had to reduce my intake by quarter pills (went down a quarter every two weeks) until I was off them completely. I have tried St. John's Wort a couple of times and I believe it helped me (though the changes were subtle, not like they were when I first went on Paxil).

Perhaps it would be good for him to try a different medication, but whatever happens, best of luck to both of you!
