Consumer Review: Paxil Is Reducing My Sex Drive And Making It Hard For Me To Reach Orgasm.
|
I have been on Paxil, 20 mg/day, for the past year and am finding a reduction in the ability to reach orgasm as well as a reduction in my sex drive. I have been contemplating going off Paxil and trying to find a natural alternative.
Any suggestions as to how to stop taking Paxil as well as any other possible alternative therapies?!

I've had the same problem with difficulty reaching orgasm since I was put on Paxil. It's markedly worse at 30 mg/g than the 20 I was initially prescribed, and I'm not sure what will happen if I go to 40, as I'm still depressed and unable to work.
It makes masturbating take way too long, and I'm a busy guy without time to waste with such frivolous necessities. But then when I'm with a partner, it's impractical to reach orgasm. I don't know what to do because I can't go without the Paxil.
When I first went on Paxil almost 2 months ago (hard to believe it's been that long!), I had trouble sleeping and a dry mouth when I exercised, but the side effects pretty much went away with time. I'm just hoping to god that my Paxil-induced symptoms go away before my depression does, which it hopefully will in the next month as I get used to the new dosage.
Man, this whole situation sucks. I used to be just fine. Now my business is failing because I just can't get any work done. If anyone has worked out ways to manage the side effects (or symptoms, for that matter), please let me know.

I too have had the same problems. Paxil has caused me to gain weight, lowered my ability to finish tasks, and I have a very hard time reaching orgasm. However, I have started taking it at night, and the major effects of Paxil have slightly lowered by comparison. After I began the night route, there were some change in my sexual peak and work habits. I would still like to stop taking this medication, but I have heard it is hard to switch to something else.

I was originally prescribed Prozac. My side effects were very pronounced and disturbing. They were far more distressing than the anxiety and depression that I suffered. I was almost unable to orgasm and my partner was very concerned for my well being since she could see how frustrated I got. It is ironic that I used to think it would be great to be able to last for 2 hours before having an orgasm. Now that I have done it....well, I think you know what I mean.
I spoke with my doctor and he prescribed Paxil. Similar side effects were noticed, however they were not as pronounced. After a month or so, I switched to Serzone. Bingo! No more side effects and things were more like they should be. My advice is to go to your doctor and ask about alternative medications. There are lots of published studies showing the percentage of patients that experienced side effects. Compare those studies. You will see that certain medications have much lower sexual side effects than others.
Paxil has a lower percentage of sexual side effects than Prozac but a higher percentage than Serzone. I might also add that the anxiety produced from the sexual side effects MAY be having a direct effect on the resolution of your depression. Life is hard and fraught with many problems. When you get depressed, any more stresses just seem to be amplified...the "straw that breaks the camel's back" kind of situation, if you will. One of the biggest stresses is sexual performance (or lack thereof).
Any stress you feel from sexual inadequacy, whether perceived or real, is likely to affect the long term therapy and ultimate resolution of your depression. Give yourself a break, go talk to your doctor. Be completely honest with him/her about your sexual performance and ask for a change of medication. You owe it to yourself to be happy. I am sure that your doctor would like to help you achieve that happiness.
Best wishes,
DLM
