Consumer Review: Ritalin Saved My Son From Being Placed Into Special Education Classes.

My very bright son's classroom behavior was so extreme he was placed in a special education class for two years. Of course, when we saw that he was in trouble and needed help, we first attended weekly family counseling sessions, and arranged individual therapy for him. Nothing changed for my son. His behavior at school remained the same or worsened. Our home life was tense. When a pediatric neurologist finally diagnosed him with ADD and suggested Ritalin, I was at first adamantly opposed because the idea of such medication for my child went against all I believed in. But nothing improved with traditional methods.
I could see my son's frustration at his lack of control, could see his pain at being so marginalized among his peers. I could see his future slipping away, as success in this culture requires education, which, trust me, does not happen in a special education environment. Finally I consented to "try" the drugs, as we hadn't much to lose at that point.
My son earned his way back into mainstream elementary school after ONE WEEK on Ritalin. If I hadn't seen the transformation with my own eyes, I never would have believed it. After successfully transitioning back into mainstream elementary school, Ritalin enabled him to graduate and then successfully complete high school. Today, at 23, he is a Le Cordon Bleu chef with a bright future ahead of him.
Historically and statistically, kids with untreated ADD tend to fail in life. Their lack of control, focus, and tendency toward depression put them at high risk for crime and other socially unproductive/destructive behaviors. They populate our prisons, give birth as teenagers, and worse. Yes, Ritalin has been over-prescribed and it hasn't been effective in all families. But it has also worked miracles in the lives of others.
