Consumer Review: Xanax Can Be Addictive. I Had Horrible Withdrawal Symptoms When I Quit Taking It After 6 Years.

I would like to submit my experience with Xanax and warn everyone that the drug is highly addictive and can be VERY difficult to wean off of if taken for more than a few weeks.
I took 4 mg/day for six years. I needed it for GAD, and it DOES WORK. It is very relaxing. The problem is, it has a long half-life, and therefore is more addictive than short-term Benzodiazepines such as Valium. Also, I had profound short-term memory loss while on the medication. Since I have quit taking it, it has improved, but not dramatically.
I decided to quit taking them last year, and after some investigation on my own and talking to a couple of doctors, decided to check into a hospital for a few days to detox. Apparently, it is VERY dangerous to quit cold-turkey. You can supposedly go into seizures. Being as though I live alone, I felt that it would be safer to stop taking it in an environment where I could be monitored.
Well, needless to say, it was the worst three days of my life. I was given Phenobarbital and phenergan, but I thought I would die.
I think that Xanax is an effective drug, but people should be aware of the impact it can have.

I was given xanax for PMS years ago. I would take it only sometimes, but eventually I felt like I needed it all the time. I detoxed off it alone, which can be dangerous. Now I am taking non-addictive meds for PMS and it's working slowly. I feel doctors don't monitor their patients properly. I almost died through the withdrawal period. It was horrible.
