My experience on Zoloft was not a good one. I developed a type of mania on the medication, which was hard to see while being on it. However, after loosing a graduate student appointment, a job, and a relationship, not to mention a lot of money, I learned how devastating an effect this medication had on my life. Let's face it, Zoloft's maker is out to make a buck. They have some of the brightest researchers out there. However, those researchers are rewarded by stock options and promises of big money if they are able to push new medications out to market. Therefore, these researcher's goal becomes the "bottom line" rather than helping people to feel better. This is why I think their products are inherently flawed. If you decide to take or continue to take Zoloft, bear in mind you are taking a rather large risk and making a lot of people at the company really wealthy. Do get me wrong, I think they have many products that are of great quality. However, be wary about this one.

In response to mania development on Zoloft. I have quite an experience of taking antidepressants over many years. The doctors tried one drug after another, and I spent many months seriously ill from depression in the hospital. In all, I have spent over a year in the hospital and have taken over 10 different types of antidepressant. Part of this time, I was held on constant suicide watch.

Zoloft changed my life. I have been taking it for nearly a year, and I have never felt better in my life (understatement). On the other hand, I have seen the effects of wrong dosage or too high dosage on depressed patients. Mania is a very common site effect when patients are given the wrong drug or too high a dosage. This is something the doctor should have seen and acted on immediately since it is very well known and there are clear warnings from the drug authorities about this. Getting mania from antidepressants is very bad, because you go from one extreme state of illness to another. Mania is one of the most destructive mental disorders to one's personal life. It was a wise decision to stop taking Zoloft and you should change doctors and tell your former doctor about his incompetence. The good news is that if the mania is only connected with Zoloft, then you can rest easy knowing that it is very unlikely that you will get another mania unless you take some drug that sends you spinning again.
