| I began taking St. John's Wort about five months ago, after having done some basic research on the herb. I was aware there may be some photosensitivity, and this did happen this summer after a lot of sun exposure. My skin became very itchy. It seemed to subside once I decreased the sun exposure. My eyes are normally sensitive to light, so I can't say I noticed any difference in this regard. My moods definitely "disappeared." Actually, for a while I felt I was feeling nothing. Not bad (less anxiety and depression), but no particular positive feelings either (joy, love, excitement).
One symptom that really snuck up on me though, particularly because I found no reference to it in any literature, was sexual dysfunction. While taking St. John's Wort, my libido was diminished and frankly, I could be "right there" but could not have an orgasm. If I did, after an abnormally long period of time, the intensity of it was disappointing to say the least. I have never had this problem under any circumstance before. This problem was described to me by several friends who are on prescription antidepressants. I have been weaning myself off of SJW over the last several weeks. If you search around, you may find concerns being raised about the use of this herb, and not just by the conventional medical establishment. While I felt generally better on it, I am becoming concerned about what is not known. In everything I have read, you should NOT be taking this while pregnant.
