Question: How Were Steroids Discovered?
|
I go to Health Careers High School. I am doing a history fair project on the influence and impact of steroids on the athletic community. I was wondering if you know who discovered synthetic steroids? How were steroids discovered? Also, any other information you could give me on steroids that would help me in my research would be greatly appreciated.

I did a research paper on steroids last year and found that Charles E. Brown was the first to use a steroid supplement on humans. Also, a man by the name of John Hunter first experimented with the male hormone testosterone in the 1700's out of a rooster. He put the hormone in a hen and found the hen developed rooster characteristics.

Anabolic steroids in the form of synthetic hormones were first used primarily in Nazi Germany (WWII) in attempts to create a superior race. These hormones that were developed were subsequently used by the Allies in areas that were severely affected by war famine in hopes to aid those that suffered from malnourishment and other related ailments.
