Can anybody quote to me a study done with creatine showing it has negative side effects on the kidneys. I'm curious to now of it if one exists.

Word of Caution: The study was done on mice, so the results cannot be assumed to be the same for humans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. As of now no human studies have begun. Also, this animal study showed neuroprotection before disease onset and did not study whether creatine extended life after disease progression was underway. As with any supplement or medication, please consult your physician before trying creatine.

Creatine Monohydrate - is a compound that's naturally made in our bodies to supply energy to our muscles. Creatine is manufactured in the liver and may also be produced in the pancreas and kidneys. It is transported in the blood and absorbed by muscle cells, where it is converted to creatine phosphate, also called "phosphocreatine." Our bodies usually produce about 2 grams of creatine per day. Creatine can also be found in certain foods. The richest source of creatine in food is in animal muscle, such as meats and fish, one pound of beef has 2 grams of creatine.

What it is, naturally: An amino acid (a protein) that is produced in tiny doses by the liver, kidneys and pancreas and stored in the muscles. In food, it is found in meat and fish.

What it is, synthetically: A simple heated brew of water and the salts cyanamide and sarcosine.

How it works, technically: Creatine helps muscles replenish adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel for muscle contraction. Since muscles recuperate more quickly from exercise with creatine supplementation, athletes can train longer, more frequently (with less rest) and at higher intensity.

1) Megadosing. If you take 10 times the recommended dose, as does Baltimore's Brady Anderson, a spokesman for a creatine manufacturer, the kidneys can become stressed from eliminating the excess. Derek Bell, a Houston Astros outfielder, was twice hospitalized last year for severe kidney ailments which he openly blames on creatine

Theres alot more to this study but i trimmed i down for practical use. The facts of the matter is if you take it normally you will be safe if you take 50 x the reccomended doeses youcould have problems, its all about moderation even vitimin C is bad for you in a high enough dose.

As long as your an adult and take care of your body it will take care of you.

I took creatine for 3 months. Out of all the supplements I have taken in my 20 years of weight training it is the only one that actully worked. I gained 20lbs in 2 weeks no lie. I thought the stuff was great until I was awaken at 2 a.m by a sharp stabbing pain in my lower back it was the worse pain i have ever had in my life. TO make a long painful story short I develope six kidney stones from the use of creatine. The stones i passed were sent to a lab and analyzed so i know for a fact that creatine causes kidney stones and is not safe for your kidneys.

Hahaha, no wrong. kidney stones are caused by calcium (actually its a dirivitive of calcium) nothing to do with creatine so what every "lab" you sent your stones to should be shut down for malpractice.

Like i said tho the study was done on mice and only in huge amounts creatines be proven to do any damage, its not proven yet weather letting creatine build up in the kidneys has any side effects yet but its assumed it has.

You said who have been training for 20 years? ewll then im assuming that your near 40ish? maybe older? well then it seems quite possible that kidney stones are quite well known to happen at these types of ages, making any claim its creatine a very skeptical one. Seriously tho, what ever lab atributed your stones to creatine are fools they may have found trace amounts in the stones but nothing to actually say creatine formed them, i would really like to know who runs this lab where they are located and whats the labs name.

I think it depends on how much creatine a day that you take.
Its already in your body. I think almost everybody about knows that.
Nobody knows what the side effects of creatine really are either I don't think. On all creatine bottles, containers, etc, have no side effects shown on there. But like my mother always said. "Whatever sounds too good, Must be too good to believe." Or either something up with that. Now I'm on creatine. I'm a swimmer and weight-trainer. I love doing alot of cardio and workout. I play basketball from time to time with my friends at the gym and swim on a swim team. I've been using creatine for about over a good three months now. I used to suck at running and jogging but now I'm just getting more better and better at it like swimming and weight-training class in my high school. Too me creatine is much better then steroids. Steroids makes your nuts shrink up and penis small. Creatine don't do that. But creatine cause big muscles and energy in you? So how do you think this stuff actually works? Maybe it has something to do with your kidneys, and kidney stones maybe? Just maybe? Who knows? I called The Creatine Company one time on and from one of my creatine bottle containers. EAS Creatine Plus. I asked the guy if there are any harmful bad side effects like that *Kidney Stone Failures* and he said "No." But then again do you think you should really believe in it and in other peoples answers on here from this website. You make the decision. Creatine to me is a musclebuilder not a food supplement. I read some of the nutritionalsupplements.com bible book one time in the creatine section of it and a person said in there it was a Food Supplement. How come I'm gaining tremendous amounts of muscle mass and lean mass and energy from it then if it's just a Food supplement? I mean come on. All my teachers and parents at school are talking about how big my back, arms, and widtharms are getting now and how much weight I am loosing now in my belly and love handle areas. But like what my mom also said whatever is to good isn't always true. Unless it's bad and harmful side effects like kidney failure. I'm just taking the chance. So I can have big steroid-like muscles and side-effects. They say on this site Steroids build muscle fast. So who knows for sure what creatine does to your body? But hey, you die soon someday anyways though. Is what I always say. So why not take then chance and risk man. Take the crap and get kidney failure. Nah j/k I don't know if it can cause you to have that or not for sure. I know my Confidence in myself from being around other girls are getting better though. Because of how much my health, and looks are getting overall better and better everyday. I loose weight and gain atleast some amounts of muscle everyday from using creatine. I use EAS Creatine Plus kind. You can buy it at walmart. Not that expensive. Or atleast my mom thinks and my moms real cheap on buying that kind of stuff to for your body. Before I boughten creatine I done alot of researched on it. I asked my weight-training class buddies tons of questions regarding safety issues of using it, the internet, seasrch engines, and etc, Nobody knows for sure unfortunately what the side effects of creatine are for the kidney stones and kidney failures. Cause you know there company are just gonna say "No side effects what so ever but muscle gain and oh yeah man I definately use creatine." "I'll use that good stuff till I The Day I Die." Make Your Decision. Take The Risk. Take The Chance. Is all I have to say. I'm taking it all though. I'm 17 years old and now officially from creatine can workout like a 20 or 25 year old or atleast how I feel and think anyways from using it for so long now.

Ok people. Sometimes, it still amazes me at the lack of knowelege/understanding in some posts. You naturally have creatine in your diet. If you eat meat, you ingest creatine. It therefore is a food supplement when you take more. You already naturally consume it. Just like protein. But when you are working out, if you eat a lot more protein, you blow up fast. Why? You are giving your body what it needs to grow and build muscle and not catabolize pre-existing muscle to build new. Can you megadose on it? Of course you can have too much of anything. You can get fat from too much protein or carbs. But when you are lifting weight and very active you need more of everything. Supplementing and giving your body what it needs to keep building instead of catabolizing is necessary to make good gains consistently. It is not magically creating muscles on you. If you did not work out in addition it would do absolutely nothing for you.

Kidney stones

I've only ever had kidney stones once (excutiatingly painful!) and that was 11 weeks into the only ever time I've ever taken Creatine. I've not had any reoccurance in the 3 years since that event.

Perhaps this is just another coincidence, but I doubt it!

I'm a firm believer that creatine won't cause any damage to your kidneys as long as you don't overdose, as with anything else. You also have to make sure to drink at least a gallon of water a day.

I perhaps wasn't drinking enough water. I was also eating a high protein diet for the first time at the same time (I was doing the body for life programme).

I'm very wary of creatine now, but am going to try it again (this time at much lower doses) - before I took 20g for 5 days then 5g ongoing - this time I'm going to stick to around 2.5g and build up slowly and then have breaks as I progress. If I experience any adverse reaction I'll post again.

Here's my $0.02.

Before I started working out and taking creatine I was fine. Shortly after I developed kidney stones. All of my stones are Uric acid. I have been to a Urologist more times than I care to remember. I have had go up and blast out the stone with a laser. He blamed it on my diet. After taking blood samples my creatinine levels were always off the charts high. Recently I started working out again. I have conducted my own personal experiments. The first couple of days I took creatine. About 3-4 days later I was passing stone. At first I thought it was my diet because I had also eaten peanuts - I was told any source of protein other than soy would cause me to have stones. So, this past Saturday and Sunday I took one does before my workouts. I am now in the middle of the painful process of passing a stone.

Since my introduction to creatine I have passed well over 50 stones. Some painful others not. I'm done with creatine. During this last 'test' I made sure I took plenty of water but to no avail. Yes, you get stronger and bigger but its just not worth it anymore.

All my doses were as prescribed by the manufacturer. All my stones were produced over the course of about 4 years time

I am not a doctor so i can not tell you if creatine can cause kidney problems. But if used as directed you should have no problems. If anyone is interested try using Con-Crete (Creatine) i find it to be one of the best on the market.
