Training Question: What Is A Good Muscle Building Workout For An Old Fart Like Me (I'm 52)?
Give me some tips, please, on reducing my body fat and building mass with out tearing tendons and screwing myself up, which I seem to be doing. I have been very fit at times in my life, but I intend to buff myself out now that I've reached this age and have gotten serious. My wife and I live clean. I don't want to pump myself full of strange things that I suspect some of the Cro-magnons at Golds are. I'm 52 and have a personal trainer and he's a pretty good chap. I work out fairly hard 3 times a week. I'm no baby (I went through South African Parachute School at the age of 30, and survived Support Commando in Africa-I've walked the whole damned continent-I DO NOT quit!)

I'm surprised your trainer still leaves you wondering if there is some other method to build strength. Most folks who have and can afford a trainer, will get all they need for ideas. But here are a couple from a guy who has been at it for 25 years:

Stay with compound joint exercises such as squat, bench press, military press, and deadlifts. Do whatever exercises you choose in a slow form conscious manner. If you don't already, keep a journal of workouts and foods you eat. Many folks are surprised about the relationship between the two. Review your journal once a month to see if there are any relationships. Adjust accordingly. Lastly, change things up every now and then. Enjoy! I'm only a couple years behind you so I hope this keeps working.
