Consumer Review: Whey Protein Seems To Be Giving Me Kidney Pain Unless I Drink Tons Of Water.
I have been taking a Whey protein supplement (which also contains Glutamine and some BCAAs) for three or four months, and have been very pleased with my muscle development and improved recovery time. Recently, I have been experiencing back pain in the kidney area that seems to go away when I drink LOTS of water. Sometimes this pain is very intense. Has anyone heard of any connection between the kidney pain the Whey protein. I have heard about potential kidney trouble with creatine (which I do not use), but not with Whey. Any ideas?

Taking immense amounts of protein has been shown to have adverse side effects on the kidneys when continued over long periods of time. I have managed to avoid any kidney problems so far. I take around 100-150 grams a day of protein, both from whey protein supplements as well as whole food. Hope this helped.

Mass amounts of protein can cause the kidneys trouble if there is an underlying problem with the kidneys. If you are having kidney pains, first take a visit to your doctor. Then, drink lots of water and try lowering your protein intake. One gram of protein per kg of body weight is a general rule of thumb when taking protein.
